HBO Cancels One Game of Thrones Prequel, Then Announces Another

So some pretty big news this week for all my fellow Game of Thrones fans! HBO has had plans for multiple Game of Thrones prequel series, with some rumors saying they wanted as many as FIVE!!

Well one of those prequel series is already out the door. The Naomi Watts led prequel series that was set thousands of years before the events of the original show has been officially scrapped, which is shocking for a few reasons.

The first of these being that this pilot must’ve been bad. Like really, really bad. The original pilot for Game of Thrones was reshot as well, in fact it was a disaster. Multiple roles, including the role of Daenerys Targaryen, were recast. With the interest in GoT being at an all-time high, it’s surprising that even if the pilot was bad, that HBO wouldn’t green light reshoots, recastings, and the like.

The second reason I think this show was canned, was that maybe the time period was of little to no interest to the general viewer. This show was going to take place thousands of years before the events of the show. The only major families that would’ve maybe been involved would’ve been the Starks and the Lannisters. There were no Targaryens, dragons, or any of the stuff that makes GoT really fun! Maybe HBO just decided that people weren’t going to be interested in a show that didn’t at least involved familiar names.

Some good news though! Literally the same day they cancelled one pilot, HBO ordered another straight to series. ‘House of the Dragon’ will take place 300 years before the original show and will chronicle the “beginning of the end” for house Targaryen.

Now this makes sense. People LOVE the Targaryens. They love Dragons (which yes, will be involved plenty in this show). This prequel will also feature lots of the family names we are used to: Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, This is something to get excited about.

I love Game of Thrones and and was ready for as many prequels as possible. So while one getting cancelled is a major bummer, us getting another confirmed one is still exciting!
